Otto Dix

Arguably the most important War artist of the 20th century, when studying his works during A-level I was shocked by the development of his skill. Beginning his career with self portraits and simple sketches, his life was irrevocably shaped by his experience as a machine gunner in the First World War. Like many other great artists of this period, his work developed into representations of his psyche. Both earlier and later works such as Sturmtruppe geht unter Gas vor (1924) and Der Krieg or the Dresden Triptych (1929) typify an artist plagued by memory.

He worked to a very high degree, and his deeply impactful paintings continue to serve as a reminder of the horrors of war.
